Lewis Hamilton set the pace in Friday practice at the Spanish Grand Prix as Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull looked closely matched.

The seven-time champion was just 0.022 seconds quicker than Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, with McLaren’s Lando Norris third just 0.055secs off the pace.

However, the risks of making assumptions about competitive form from Friday practice were underlined by Pierre Gasly’s Alpine setting fourth-fastest time.

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, complaining of a lack of front grip, was fifth ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Mercedes’ George Russell.

In the first session, Norris set the pace from Verstappen.

The fans have been out in sunny Barcelona, with handmade signs and cardboard cut-outs of the drivers.

I am loving some of the signs I've seen today.

    16:59 21 June

Earlier this week, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc joined Monegasque royalty as the Olympic torch made it's way to the principality of Monaco before the Paris 2024 games.

He was chosen as a torchbearer to take the Olympic flame around the streets of Monaco.

"It's a huge honour for me," he said.

Zhou Guanyu's session is over, he's out of the car and the engineers are hard at work.

Charles Leclerc is back out on track, he's in sixth spot on the soft tyres. The Monagasque has also been busy this week too...

Valtteri Bottas is in 10th spot on the hard tyres.

He's been busy before the Spanish Grand Prix weekend.

The Finn swapped out four wheels for two and won his first gravel cycling race at the FNLD GRVL 114km course.

    Multi-talented, that.

Lewis Hamilton has made himself comfy at the top spot.

Carlos Sainz is in second, Lando Norris in third, Gasly in fourth, all on the soft tyres.

Verstappen is fifth but he's just been in the garage to put on new soft tyres.

Zhou Guanyu has taken a trip back to the Sauber garage.

    Marc Priestley

Although Sergio Perez has been stuck in the garage with some sort of technical issue, he has finally gone out now with a soft-tyre run, but it's only been good enough for 13th, eight-tenths off the time Lewis Hamilton's been able to do on the same tyre.

If that's a genuine measure of Perez's single-lap pace, that's not good enough.

The Haas look like they're in good stead for the weekend.

Kevin Magnussen sits in 11th, on the soft tyres, while Nico Hulkenberg is back in his seat after he let Ollie Bearman borrow it for first practice.

Hulkenberg is in P12 on the hard tyres.

Charles Leclerc is in the Ferrari garage as the engineers work on the front of the car.

Max Verstappen is the only driver in the top 10 on the hard compound, everyone else is on the soft.

Verstappen is currently fifth while his team-mate Sergio Perez is back in the Red Bull garage.

Lewis Hamilton holds on in the P1 spot.

    Harry Benjamin
    BBC F1 Commentator

Sergio Perez had been in the pits for a little while, has only done eight laps and is down in 20th. He hasn't been out on the soft compound of tyre, so I wonder if there is a little bit of an issue going on down in the Mexican's side of the garage...

It's not all about Spanish Grand Prix practice today. There is another sporting event going on elsewhere in Europe and Alpine's Pierre Gasly showed he is right behind the France football team before they play the Netherlands in Euro 2024 later tonight.

Pierre Gasly has moved up to fourth place on the soft tyres.

Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris are back out on track on new sets of the soft compound too.

Luckily for Gasly, practice two doesn't clash with a Euro 2024 game I'm sure he wouldn't want to miss.

Zhou Guanyu isn't too happy. He felt the RB of Yuki Tsunoda was blocking him in the final sector.

"Not surprised" was his response after being told it was Tsunoda.
