Standing O for Joe Burrow
As he trotted onto the field for his first action since tearing his ACL in Week 11 last year, quarterback Joe Burrow received a standing ovation from the Cincinnati Bengals home crowd on Sunday.
He didn't see much action in the team's preseason finale against the Dolphins, but it was still a welcomed sight. Burrow tore his ACL and MCL in his left knee, along with damage to his PCL and meniscus.
Burrow completed 264 of 404 passes for 2,688 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions with another three rushing scores in 10 games in 2020.

Todd Gurley to the Ravens?
Free agent running back and Baltimore native Todd Gurley has already been linked to the Ravens with the news J.K. Dobbins is out for the year with an ACL tear.
The Athletic's Jeff Zrebiec writes about the Ravens' options, which includes having another look at Gurley, who visited in June.
While sharing backfield duties in Atlanta, Gurley finished 2020 with 195 carries for 678 yards and nine rushing touchdowns with 25 catches for another 164 yards. He's a few years removed from his outstanding 2017 and 2018 campaigns and he hasn't quite seen that production since, but Gurley is still only 27. Perhaps a role to help his hometown team is just what he and the Ravens need.

Jets acquiring Texans' Shaq Lawson for sixth-round pick: Sources
Shaq Lawson just didn't work out for the Houston Texans and the New York Jets needed pass-rush help.
The Jets are acquiring defensive end Shaq Lawson from Houston for a sixth-round pick, a source confirmed to The Athletic on Sunday. The 2022 pick was originally the 49ers', acquired in the Jordan Willis trade.
Lawson spent the first four seasons of his career in Buffalo and last season in Miami, which traded him to Houston in March for linebacker Benardrick McKinney and a swap of late-round picks. He will help the Jets replace defensive end Carl Lawson, who is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles he suffered in a joint practice with the Packers.
In 2020, Shaq Lawson had 32 combined tackles (17 solo), four sacks, 18 quarterback hits, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery returned 36 yards for a touchdown.

Courtland Sutton scores TD in first game since Week 2 of 2020
Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton made his preseason debut in Denver's 17-12 win against the Los Angeles Rams Saturday night. It was the first game action for the former second-round draft pick since suffering an ACL injury in Week 2 of the 2020 season and Sutton gave Broncos fans plenty to be excited about.
He caught two passes for 27 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown pass from Teddy Bridgewater — who was named as Denver's starting quarterback earlier this week.

Tyler Huntley accounts for five TDs in preseason finale
The Ravens are set at quarterback with former MVP Lamar Jackson poised for another big season. But after yet another impressive performance in an exhibition from Tyler Huntley, Baltimore has got to feel confident if its backup has to step in this season.
Huntley accounted for five touchdowns in the Ravens' 37-3 preseason win against the Washington Football Team. He threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another in the game while completing 24 of 33 passes.
His performance helped Baltimore win its 20th-straight preseason game.

Bears' Justin Fields throws touchdown in preseason finale vs. Titans
Making his first preseason start, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields threw a touchdown just before the end of the second quarter to put his team up 14-10 over the Tennessee Titans heading into halftime of the Saturday finale ahead of the regular season.
Scrambling to his right, Fields rifled a pass through a tight window to find tight end Jesper Horsted for Chicago's first offensive touchdown of the day. At the half, Fields had completed 7 of his 10 pass attempts for 54 yards. He also scrambled for 13 yards on two carries.

Justin Reid assumes kicking duties in Texans preseason game against Buccaneers
Texans safety Justin Reid was seen attempting field goals, during warmups, ahead of Houston's preseason matchup against Tampa Bay. Reid ultimately delivered the opening kickoff as well.
The fourth-year defensive back assumed those extra duties because kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn "is dealing with a minor injury," according to a report from The Athletic's Aaron Reiss.
Reid is one of the team’s longest-tenured players. The 2018 third-round pick out of Stanford has logged five interceptions, 19 passes defended and a forced fumble in his three seasons with the franchise.

Ravens' J.K. Dobbins exits with knee injury against Washington
Baltimore Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins was helped off the field by trainers after a knee injury in the first quarter of Saturday’s preseason game against the Washington Football Team. Dobbins, the projected starting running back for the Ravens, was ruled out for the rest of the game by the team.
Dobbins was tackled after catching a screen pass with 9:06 left in the first quarter, then grabbed his left knee. Dobbins was carted back to the locker room after being evaluated on the sideline.
The 2020 second-round pick rushed for 805 yards and nine touchdowns in 15 games last season. As a rookie last season, Dobbins led all running backs in yards per carry (6.0).

Buccaneers place Ndamukong Suh on reserve/COVID-19 list
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers placed defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh on the reserve/COVID-19 list, and he did not travel with the team to Houston for the preseason finale. He cannot return until he has two negative tests at least 24 hours apart.
Suh is the fourth Bucs player on the list, joining kicker Ryan Succop and offensive linemen Earl Watford and Nick Leverett. Succop went on the list on Tuesday, and Watford and Leverett were added on Friday.
Head coach Bruce Arians said after Succop tested positive for the virus that he would not allow players, including those who are fully vaccinated, to leave the team hotel or have family visit during road trips this season.
Suh, 34, is entering his third season with the Buccaneers. The three-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowler hasn't missed a game due to injury in his 11-year career.

Bills' Josh Allen carves up Packers' backups; Jordan Love inconsistent
Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen didn't show any rust in his first game action of 2021, lighting up the Green Bay Packers in the first half of Saturday's preseason game.
Allen, who sat out the Bills' first two exhibitions, went 20 of 26 for 194 yards and two touchdowns in three possessions, working against mostly Packers backups. He rifled a 31-yard touchdown to Gabriel Davis on third-and-20 midway through the first quarter, then added a 3-yard TD toss to Zack Moss late in the first half to give Buffalo a 13-0 lead.
Jake Fromm entered just before halftime, ending Allen's day.
Allen, 25, finished second in MVP voting last season and signed a six-year, $258 million contract extension earlier this month.
On the other side, quarterback Jordan Love returned from a right shoulder injury sustained in the preseason opener to start for the Packers. Playing mostly with reserves against the Bills' starting defense, Love went 10 of 16 for 132 yards with an interception in the first half.
Green Bay moved at least 54 yards on all three of its first-half possessions, but Love threw incomplete on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line on the opening drive and was intercepted in the end zone on the second. The third drive stalled at the 10, and Mason Crosby missed a 28-year field-goal attempt to keep the Packers scoreless.

Bills' Isaiah McKenzie gets vaccinated following fine for not wearing mask
Buffalo Bills wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie appears to have gotten the COVID-19 vaccine two days after he said he was fined $14,650 by the NFL for not wearing a mask in the team facility. According to NFL COVID-19 protocols, unvaccinated players are required to wear a mask.
"For the greater good," McKenzie wrote alongside a video of him holding up his vaccination card, which he posted on Instagram on Saturday morning. The card shows his first shot was administered Saturday.
McKenzie tweeted about the fine Thursday morning, writing, "They got me! @NFL you win." The league had previously given him a written warning and issued another letter in addition to the fine Thursday morning.

Eagles acquire Gardner Minshew for conditional sixth-round pick
The Eagles acquired quarterback Gardner Minshew from the Jaguars on Saturday in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick, the team announced. The pick can become a fifth-rounder if Minshew plays at least 50 percent of the snaps in three games this season, according to multiple reports.
Minshew, 25, was relegated to backup duties in Jacksonville when rookie No. 1 pick Trevor Lawrence was officially named the starter on Wednesday. He went 7-13 in 20 starts through his first two seasons with the Jaguars.
A sixth-round pick out of Washington State in 2019, Minshew threw for 3,271 yards, 21 touchdowns and six interceptions in 14 games (12 starts) as a rookie. He added 2,259 yards, 16 touchdowns and five interceptions in nine games (eight starts) last season.

A tie in the preseason
James Morgan's 49-yard Hail Mary pass to Kenny Yeboah as time expired in regulation (see below) and Josh Adams' two-point conversion run helped the Jets finish a tie with the Eagles in Friday's preseason game.
Overtime in the preseason was officially eliminated — perhaps for good reason — in April. So, no winner will be determined in this one.
Another note from this game: 13-year veteran quarterback and Super Bowl XLVII champion and MVP Joe Flacco completed 13 of 16 passes for 188 yards with two 40-plus touchdown passes for the Eagles. He played for the Jets in 2020.

Boston Scott with the hesi
Check out this play from Eagles running back Boston Scott's 49-yard touchdown catch-and-run.
Scott shakes one defender off and makes the second miss with a stutter step one might see in an NBA arena en route to the end zone. The picture above says it all.

Patrick Mahomes to Tyreek Hill — still dangerous
Check out Patrick Mahomes' 35-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill, who seemingly just blazed his way to the end zone for the score.
One of the league's most potent quarterback-receiver combos is still just that — potent. You don't need preseason to know that.

Colts QB Sam Ehlinger leaves preseason game with knee injury
Indianapolis Colts quarterback Sam Ehlinger left the team's preseason finale against the Detroit Lions with a knee injury and won't return, the team said.
Ehlinger, a rookie sixth-round pick competing with Jacob Eason for the No. 2 job behind Carson Wentz, was 3-of-3 for 63 yards and had one rush for 14 yards before exiting the game. That includes a play in the second quarter where Ehlinger escaped a sack before completing a long throw to Dezmon Patmon for 60 yards.

Coach Rivers wins big in high school football debut
Nine-time Pro Bowl quarterback Philip Rivers won his first game as head coach of the St. Michael Catholic High School (Ala.) football team on Thursday night. His team defeated McIntosh, 49-0.
Rivers, who is from Decatur, Ala., and played his high school football in Athens, Ala., retired from the NFL in January after 17 seasons. Sixteen of those years were spent with the Chargers and the last with the Colts.
Rivers has a playing career he can be proud of. The Athletic discussed his Hall of Fame candidacy and legacy in January.
Thursday's result is the start of something new, though, and Rivers seems excited about it.

Trending: Clowney thinks guards aren't real athletes
Browns defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is trending on Twitter over his comments to the Akron Beacon Journal about the potential of lining up against guards this season.
Cleveland is reportedly experimenting with the idea of using Clowney — who signed with the Browns on a one-year deal worth up to $10 million in April — and star defensive end Myles Garrett at defensive tackle in some packages.
"We love that matchup," Clowney said. "We feel like they're the unathletic guys. That guard position, they're not real athletes down there. So they're just physical and maulers. But we try to get in there and create those matchups for certain guys, and hopefully, we get some wins.
"You've got to think different (on the interior). Everything happens very, very fast down there. Those guys are much bigger down there. So, yes, your whole mindset has got to change in how you attack the quarterback, how you attack the guys down there."
As expected, the comments aren't going over well (see below).

Saints' preseason finale vs. Cardinals canceled due to Hurricane Ida
Saturday's preseason finale between the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals is canceled with Hurricane Ida potentially impacting New Orleans. The game previously had been moved up seven hours to 1 p.m. ET.
Ida, which strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane on Friday, is supposed to hit southern Louisiana on Sunday night, with New Orleans already in a hurricane watch. There is a possibility it could turn into a Category 3 hurricane by the time it makes landfall.
